“I have been volunteering for Essex Dementia Care since 2006 and what an amazing experience it’s been! Throughout my life, I’ve always worked and retired at 60. When we moved to Braintree I worked on the house and then found myself having nothing to do. I wanted to volunteer somewhere that helped individuals, preferably those with dementia as I had already been affected by this in my family. I visited a fair in the area to explore any opportunities and that’s when I found out about Essex Dementia Care. It fitted with what I was looking for as I didn’t feel comfortable volunteering in anyone’s house or carrying out One to One sessions. Therefore, I volunteer on a Wednesday at their Every Day Counts workshop taking groups of clients for walks, serving them drinks/meals, and interacting with them through music and singing. I always look forward to it and when I’m there I am so happy. I live by the motto ‘You don’t wait to be told what’s needed, you just get up and do it’ and I think that motivated me to start volunteering for the amazing charity, Essex Dementia Care!”
